Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Count to find the number that is 1 less than and 1 greater than the given number and then write the numbers.

5 dots and the number 5 written. 6 dots and the number 6. 7 dots and the number 7 written.

Six dots are shown for the number 6. To find the number that is 1 less than 6, count the number of dots that come before the 6 dots: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So, 5 is 1 less than 6. Write 5. To find the number that is 1 greater than 6, count the number of dots that come after the 6 dots: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. So, 7 is 1 greater than 6. Write 7.

Paper, Pencil

ACTIVITY

Write a number on a piece of paper and have your child write the number that is 1 greater. Then write another number and have your child write the number that is 1 less. Repeat with other numbers.
