TOPIC 10

Count Numbers to 20

OVERVIEW

Topic 10 continues the counting sequence with a focus on numbers 11 to 20. It highlights the principles your child needs to understand to count accurately. Your child will count a group of objects and write numerals to tell how many.

COUNT QUANTITIES 11 TO 20

Number Sequence and One-to-One Principle Throughout Topic 10, your child will practice using the correct words to count 11 to 20 objects, giving each object one and only one number. The names for the teen numbers 14, 16, 17, 18, and 19 follow a pattern. Their names begin with the ones place and then add “teen” on the end, as in “fourteen.” It can be confusing that the other numbers (11, 12, 13, and 15) do not follow that same verbal pattern. The written pattern for the teen numbers, however, is clear and consistent. Your child will review the concept that the last number counted tells the number of objects. Your child will also count the same quantity of objects in different arrangements to see that the total is the same no matter how a group is arranged.

3 pans of 10 strawberries. Each pan shows the strawberries in different arrangements.

Draw and Count Out Quantities of Objects Your child will show and draw 11 to 20 objects to match a given number.

Count On from Any Number to 20 Your child will use a number chart to count up to 20 from any number.

NUMERALS 11 TO 20

Write Numerals to Tell How Many Your child will use tracing and dot prompts to read and write numerals that represent how many objects they counted.

12 cars. Dot prompts to write the number 12 three times.

CONNECT THE MATH

You can connect the math in this topic to everyday experiences. Encourage your child to count within 20 as much as possible. For example, your child can count out ingredients to help prepare food. You might ask, “Can you please put 12 grapes and 18 blueberries in our fruit salad?” Have your child count steps when you go on a walk together, starting over at 1 after reaching 20.
