TOPIC 11
Compose and Decompose Numbers 11 to 19
OVERVIEW
Topic 11 builds a foundation for place value by focusing on composing and decomposing teen numbers as ten ones and some more ones.
COMPOSE AND DECOMPOSE NUMBERS 11 TO 19
Make the Numbers 11 to 19 Your child will compose all of the teen numbers by putting together 10 ones and some more ones. Your child will show how to make the numbers using objects, drawings, and equations.

Find Parts of the Numbers 11 to 19 Your child will decompose all of the teen numbers by breaking apart each number into 10 ones and the remaining ones. Your child will use objects, drawings, and equations to show how to break apart the numbers.
The first frame is labeled with the words ten ones and the number 10. The second frame is labeled with the words 6 ones and the number 6. The equation is 16 equals 10 plus 6. In the equation, 10 is labeled 10 ones and 6 is labeled 6 ones.
CONNECT THE MATH
You can connect the math in this topic to everyday experiences. Draw attention to teen numbers you and your child see in your home or when you are out. Have your child tell you the parts of the teen number. For example, a shirt might have a $13 price tag. The number 13 can be decomposed into 10 and 3.
