Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Draw counters, and then write an equation to show how to make 17. Tell how the picture and the equation show 10 ones and some more ones.

Two ten frames. The first has 10 counters. The second has 7 counters. 17 is 10 and 7.

There are 10 counters in the first ten-frame. Draw 7 more counters to make 17: $10 + 7 = 17$ . The picture and the equation show 10 ones and 7 more ones equal 17 ones.

Marbles, Two Bowls

ACTIVITY

Place 10 marbles or other small objects in a bowl. In a second bowl, have your child count on from 10 while adding objects until there are 17 objects in all. Repeat with 19 and then 18 objects in all.
