Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Draw counters to show 17 and complete the equation to match the picture. Tell how the picture and equation show 10 ones and some more ones.

A double 10 frame with 10 counters in the first frame and 7 counters in the second. The equation 17 = 10 + 7.

Draw 17 counters. Fill the first ten-frame with 10 of the counters. Then draw 7 more counters in the second ten-frame. So, 17 counters can be shown as 10 counters plus 7 more counters. Write the equation for this: $17 = 10 + 7$ .

Have your child sort a group of 18 objects into a group of 10 and a group of 8. Discuss how many objects there are in each group and how many there are in all. Repeat with 17 objects and 19 objects.
