Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Color the shells to continue the pattern showing the next 3 ways to make 9.

Row 1: 0 shells colored. 9 written. Row 2: 1 shell colored. 8 written.

Row 1: 2 shells colored. 2 and 7 written. Row 2: 3 shells colored. 3 and 6 written. Row 3: 4 shells colored. 4 and 5 written.

There are many ways to make 9.

One pattern is:

Row 1: Color 0 shells.

Row 2: Color 1 shell.

Row 3: Color 2 shells.

Row 4: Color 3 shells.

Row 5: Color 4 shells.

Crayons

ACTIVITY

Place 10 crayons in a row across a table (pointing upward). Ask your child to show a way to make 10 by pointing 1 crayon down. Ask your child to write the numbers for the two groups (1 and 9). Then have your child use the crayons to show all the other ways to make 10 and then write the numbers.
