Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Draw a circle around each animal that has 4 legs, draw that many counters in the top ten-frame, and then write the number to tell how many. Mark an X on each animal that does NOT have 4 legs, draw that many counters in the bottom ten-frame, and then write the number to tell how many.

10 animals. The dog, cat, rabbit, lion, bear, tiger, and horse are circled. An X is drawn on the bird, snake, and fish.

Count how many animals are in each group: those that have 4 legs and those that do not have 4 legs. Circle the dog, cat, rabbit, lion, bear, tiger, and horse because they each have 4 legs. Count how many animals are circled. Seven animals are circled, so draw 7 counters in the top ten-frame and write 7. Draw an X on the bird, fish, and snake because they do not have 4 legs. Count how many animals are marked with an X. Three animals are marked with an X, so draw 3 counters in the bottom ten-frame and write 3.

ACTIVITY

Show your child a group of up to 10 objects that are different in at least one way. For example, show 4 forks, 2 tablespoons, and 3 teaspoons (arranged in random order). Ask your child to sort the utensils into categories: spoons and NOT spoons. Have your child write numbers for each category. Repeat with other categories.
