Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Mark an X on each black button to sort the buttons into black and NOT black categories, count them, and write how many. Circle the number that is less and tell how you know.

A group of 5 black and 9 not black buttons.

Mark the black buttons with an X and count them. There are 5 black buttons, so write 5 next to the top black button. Count the buttons that are not black. There are 9 buttons that are not black, so write 9 next to the crossed-out black button at the bottom. Five is less than 9 because 5 comes before 9 when you count, so circle the 5.

ACTIVITY

Show your child a group of up to 10 objects that are different in at least one way. For example, show 5 cups and 4 mugs (arranged in random order). Ask your child to count the objects in each category, tell which has a greater number of objects, and explain how he or she knows. Repeat with other categories and alternate finding the greater/fewer number of objects.
