Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Daniel has some cubes. Then he gets some more. Count on to add to the group of cubes and then write an addition sentence to tell how many in all.

A group of 2 cubes and a group of 4 cubes. 2 is written under the group of 2. 3, 4, 5, 6 is written under the group of 4. Below is written, 2 and 4 is 6.

Daniel starts with 2 cubes. Write 2 under the group of cubes Daniel starts with. Then write the numbers as you count on: 3, 4, 5, 6. The last number you say is 6, so write 2 and 4 is 6.

Paper Clips or Pennies

 

ACTIVITY

Have your child model counting on with paper clips or pennies. For example, ask your child to make a group of 4 paper clips and a group of 3 paper clips. Have your child count the first group, and then from that number, count on the number of paper clips in the second group to find the number of paper clips in all.
