Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Add the groups to find the sum. Then write an equation to show the addition.

A square with 1 dot and a square with 7 dots. Below is written 1 and 7 is 8. Then the equation 1 plus 7 equals 8.

The first square shows 1 dot. The second square shows 7 dots. There are 8 dots in all, so 1 and 7 is 8. To write this as an equation, write a plus sign between the numbers 1 and 7, write an equal sign, and write 8 for the sum.

ACTIVITY

Make a set of number cards from 1 to 5. Shuffle them and place them facedown on a table. Take turns picking 2 number cards and finding the sum of the two numbers. Work with your child to write an equation using the plus and equal signs.
