Draw counters to show how to make 3. Then write an equation to match the counters.A mat shows 1 counter on the left and 2 counters on the right. The equation 1 plus 2 equals 3 is written.

Draw a counter in the left part of a mat to show 1. Two more counters are needed to make 3 in all. So, draw 2 counters in the right part of a mat. Complete the equation: 1+2=3.

Give your child an equation with a sum up to 5. Ask him or her to write the matching pair. For example, write 1+3=4. Your child should write 3+1=4.
