Alex puts 8 cubes on a mat. Then he moves 3 away. How many cubes are left on the mat?

 

Complete the sentence to tell how many are left.

8 cubes. 3 are off a mat and 5 are on the mat. Beside the picture is the sentence 8 take away 3 is 5.

Alex starts with 8 cubes on the mat. Write 8 as the starting number. He moves away 3. Write 3 as the number being taken away. Count how many cubes are left on the mat: 5. So, write 5 as the result.

ACTIVITY

Place 7 toys or other small objects in front of your child. Ask him or her to tell you how many toys there are in all. Move 3 of the toys to the side and tell how many toys are left. Have your child say a sentence that tells how many are left.
