Mark Xs on the counters to show how many counters to take away. Then write an equation to find the difference.

6 circles with 4 circles crossed out. Below is the sentence 6 take away 4 is 2 and the equation 6 minus 4 equals 2.

There are 6 counters in all. Mark an X on 4 of them to show 4 counters being taken away. Count how many counters are left: 2. To write this as an equation, write a minus sign between the numbers 6 and 4, write an equal sign, and write 2 for the difference.

ACTIVITY

Have your child point to the difference in a number sentence on this page and explain the number. Then give your child 4 toys and help him or her tell a subtracting story. Ask your child to find the difference. Repeat with other numbers and objects.
