There are 6 chipmunks. Four ran away. How many chipmunks are left?

 

Draw a picture and write an equation to show what is happening.

Draw counters, cubes, or other objects to represent the story. Draw 6 cubes for the 6 chipmunks at the beginning of the story. Mark an X on 4 cubes for the 4 chipmunks that run away. Count the unmarked cubes to find how many chipmunks are left: 2. Write the subtraction equation: 6-4=2.

ACTIVITY

Give your child 7 small objects and ask him or her to give you 3 of the objects. Ask your child to tell you how many objects are left and ask how he or she knows. Then ask your child to write an equation 7-3=4.
