Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Color the cubes red and blue to show a different way to break apart 5. Then write an equation to show how the red and blue cubes show 5 in all.

5 cubes. 4 are labeled red and one is labeled blue. Equation 5 equals 4 plus 1.

There are different ways to make parts of 5. One way: 4 and 1. Color 4 cubes red for the 4. Then color the other 1 cube blue for the 1. Use the parts 4 and 1 to complete the equation: $5 = 4 + 1$ .

Tell your child you have 4 counters; some are red and some are yellow. Ask your child to draw a picture to show how many red and how many yellow counters you could have. Then complete the equation $4 =$ __ $+$ __. Repeat using the number 5.
