Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1
Listen to each story. Use counters or other objects to help act out the story, to choose an operation, and then write the equations to tell the related facts.
The story for the first picture is: “Four seals are in a group. One walks away. How many seals are left?” The story for the second picture is: “Three seals are in a group. One joins them. How many seals are there in all?”

For the first story, you can use 4 counters to represent the 4 seals at the beginning. Then move 1 counter away. Three counters are left. So, 3 seals are left. This is a subtraction story, so write the subtraction fact: . For the second story, use 3 counters to represent the 3 seals at the beginning. Then add 1 counter. There are 4 counters in all. So, there are 4 seals in all. This is an addition story, so write the addition fact: .

Pennies or Paperclips
ACTIVITY
Using pennies or paper clips, ask your child to make a group of 4 or 5 objects. Then ask your child to break that group into 2 smaller groups and write an equation about the groups. Then have him or her write an equation to describe the groups using a different operation.
