Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Jada has 7 flowers. She could put 6 flowers in a red vase and 1 flower in a blue vase.

 

Use and color cubes to show another way the 7 flowers can be put in the vases. Then complete the equation to match the way.

A 10 frame with 3 red cubes and 4 blue cubes. Below, the equation 7 = 3 + 4.

Use cubes to make two parts of 7. One way: 3 and 4. So, color 3 cubes red for the 3 flowers in the red vase. Color 4 cubes blue for the 4 flowers in the blue vase. Then use 3 and 4 to complete the equation: 7=3+4.

ACTIVITY

Give your child a group of objects, such as pennies, and have him or her make a group of 6 or 7. Have him or her break apart the group into 2 groups and then write an equation about the objects.
