Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

A student has 9 pebbles from the beach. Some are gray and some are white. How can you break apart 9 to show how many of each color there might be? Complete the equation to match the cubes.

A 10 frame with 6 gray cubes and 3 white cubes. Below, the equation 9 = 6 + 3.

Use cubes to make two parts of 9. One way: 6 and 3. So, color 6 cubes white for the 6 white pebbles. Color 3 cubes gray for the 3 gray pebbles. Then use 6 and 3 to complete the equation: 9=6+3.

ACTIVITY

Give your child pennies, and then count 8 or 9 pennies aloud. Then have your child separate the pennies into two groups and write an equation about the pennies.
