Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Ten students need a raincoat. Some raincoats are red, and some are yellow.

 

Use cubes to model another way to break apart 10, and color the cubes to tell how many of each color raincoat. Then complete the equation to match the cubes.

A train of 10 cubes. Below, the equation 10 = 6 + 4. A train of 10 cubes. 1 is light and 9 are dark. Below, the equation 10 = 1 + 9.

There are different ways to make parts of 10. One way: 1 and 9. Color 1 cube for the 1 student who chooses red. Then color the other 9 cubes for the 9 students who choose yellow. Use the parts 1 and 9 to complete the equation: 10=1+9.

Color the Circles

MATERIALS

Paper, Pencil, Crayons

ACTIVITY

Draw 10 circles. Have your child count the circles. Then have him or her color in some of the circles. Have your child write an equation that tells how many circles are empty and how many are not.
