Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Count the counters to find one part of 10, draw counters to show the other part, and then write the missing number in the equation to tell the parts of 10.

A 10 frame with 4 counters and 6 circles. Below, the equation 4 + 6 = 10.

There are 4 counters, so one part of 10 is 4. To find the other part, draw counters to fill the ten-frame. 6 more counters are needed. So, two parts of 10 are 4 and 6. Complete the equation: 4+6=10.

ACTIVITY

Hold up your hands in front of your child with 1 index finger straight and the rest of your fingers closed. Ask your child to tell you the parts of 10 that your fingers show (1 and 9). Then ask your child to write an equation for those parts of 10: 1+9=10. Repeat the activity with different combinations of straight and closed fingers.
