Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Show how to count on to find the missing part of 10, and then write the number in the equation. Explain how you know your answer is correct.

The numbers 9 and 10. 10 is underlined. Below, the equation 9 + 1 = 10.

One part of 10 is 9. One way to find the missing part is to count on from 9: 9...10. One number was counted, so the missing part is 1. Two parts of 10 are 9 and 1. Complete the equation: 9+1=10. You can use counters in a ten-frame or fingers to explain why this answer is correct.

ACTIVITY

Give your child 7 small objects such as coins or beans. Ask your child to add objects until he or she has 10 objects. Then have your child fill in the missing number in this equation: 7+ ? =10 (3). Repeat the activity by starting with groups of 5, 8, and 9 objects.
