Use counters to act out each story. Choose an operation. Complete the equation.

 

Five frogs are in a group. Four frogs join the group. How many frogs are there now?

5 frogs with 4 frogs joining. The equation 5 + 4 = 9.

Nine frogs are in a group. Four frogs jump away. How many frogs are left?

9 frogs with 4 leaving. The equation 9 - 4 = 5.

 

An addition equation can be written for a joining situation.

A subtraction equation can be written for a separating situation.

ACTIVITY

Give your child a group of 6 to 10 objects. Ask your child to break the objects into two groups and then write an addition equation to match. Then have your child write the related subtraction equation.
