Six puppies are playing in the pool. One puppy leaves. How many puppies are left in the pool?

 

Mark the cube train to model the story and write an equation to match.

6 cubes with one marked. The equation 6 - 1 = 5.

Mark one cube to show one puppy leaving. Then write the equation to show one leaving: 6-1=5.

Give your child 10 small items, such as beans or paper clips. Have your child show 3 beans, then 3 more beans. Ask your child how many beans are showing in all. Tell your child to take 4 beans away. Ask your child how many beans are left. Continue using different numbers of beans, adding and removing beans.
