Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Look at the solid figure on the left that can roll. Draw a circle around the other solid figures that can roll.

On the left, a sphere. On the right, a cylinder, cube, and cone. The cylinder and cone are circled.

A cylinder and a cone can roll because they each have a curved surface. So, circle the cylinder and cone. A cube has only flat surfaces, so it cannot roll. Do not circle the cube.

MATERIALS

Ball, Can, Cube-Shaped Block

 

ACTIVITY

Show your child a ball, a can, and a cube-shaped block. Ask him or her to compare the features of each object, such as which objects can stack, which can roll, and which can slide. Have your child point to the flat surfaces on each of the objects.
