Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

For each pair of containers, circle the container that holds more and mark an X on the container that holds less, or underline the containers if they hold the same amount.

A large and a small watering can on a shelf. 2 same-size jars on a table. A large and a small bucket on the floor. The large watering can and the large bucket are circled. The small watering can and the small bucket are marked with an X. The 2 jars are underlined.

On the shelf, the watering can on the left is larger, so it holds more. Circle the watering can on the left and mark an X on the other one. On the table, both containers are the same size, so they hold the same amount. Underline both containers. Under the table, the bucket on the left is larger than the bucket on the right, so it holds more. Circle the bucket on the left and mark an X on the other one.

ACTIVITY

Set 2 pots with different capacities on the table. Ask your child which one holds more, and which one holds less. Check the answer by filling one pot with water and then pouring all or some of the water into the other pot. You can repeat using different containers.
