Sample Additional Practice Exercise 1

Think about the length of a marker. The objects that are longer than the marker are circled. There is an X through the objects that are shorter than the marker.

A book and baseball bat are circled. A connecting cube, an eraser, and a crayon have Xs through them.

Write numbers for how many objects are longer or shorter. Circle the number that is less. Tell what that means.

In the column that says Longer, the number 2 is written. In the column that says shorter, the number 3 is written. The number 2 is circled. The sentence

Count the number of objects that are longer, which are the circled objects: 1, 2. Write the number 2 in the column for Longer. Count the number of objects that are shorter, which are the objects with Xs: 1, 2, 3. Write the number 3 in the column for Shorter. Because 2 is less than 3, circle the 2. That means that there are not as many objects that are longer as objects that are shorter.
